What a Great Week

I've been having a super fun week, and now that it's almost over, I feel like I should blog about it in case it flutters away from my mind.

Wednesday: There was a huge snowstorm, therefore nobody went into work, including me. It happened also to be Valentine's Day AND my year anniversary with Mike. So he and I slept in a bit, then opened presents. Mike got me the best chocolates I've ever tasted, and each one was a work of art unto itself. I have included a picture, if you guys happen to find these at Wegmans and have lots of spending money, GET THEM. I rarely even like chocolate, and I can't get enough of them:

He also got me some beautiful roses (which are shown in the picture with my new piano) and one of my favorite films as a kid, Flight of the Navigator. Keith and I watched that movie like crazy, and it's great that it's out on DVD now. I got him a leather wine journal imported from France (but I believe it was made in Italy) and a bottle of wine. He's a wine connoisseur and I think he really liked the journal (we're not sure about the wine yet).

So after that we finished watching the anime Hellsing (for all 2 anime fans who read this, if you enjoy some cohesive storyline in your anime, this is not the thing to watch, visually it's nice though), hung out with various housemates, and got up the nerve to drive to Geneva for our dinner reservation at Ports in the snowstorm. It actually had pretty much had ended by that time, but the roads were still really crappy.

I drove, to be fair, because we were going to my hometown, plus I have way better tires on my car than he does. It took us an hour and 40 minutes to get to Geneva, when normally it takes about 50 minutes total. BUT we made our reservation. I got to chat with Jeff and Dave a bit, then we got down to the food ordering. We went a LITTLE crazy, but it was for our anniversary, so it was okay. We got a bottle of wine, fried shrimp and calamari with aoli, and some brie for appetizers. For our main meal Mike got lobster and steak, and I just got a big angus steak with potatoes and vegetables. My old boss very generously offered to buy us dessert, so I got creme brule and he got a piece of awesome peanut butter pie. And we ate EVERYTHING.

We then attempted to go to my mom's house, but since the quickest way to get there is up a ginormous hill, my little car didn't quite make it in the snow. Soooo I backed all the way down the hill into the next street and went allll the way around. We visited with her and my brothers for a few minutes, then went to see the film Music and Lyrics which was very cute and hilarious. It was about 11 by that time, so we just went home and went to bed.

Thursday: I found out from my job that I get to go to Orlando, Florida. I've never been to Florida, so that's fine by me. It's only for 2 days, but all the expenses are paid up front by the pharmaceutical company and I just have to go to a few dinners and take notes at some meetings. Not too shabby.

Friday: I check my bank account and find out that I have 1100 more dollars than I thought. It seems as if I've gotten my federal tax refund already. This is great news for me, because it just so happens that Guitar Center is having a big sale this weekend for President's Day and I was planning on using my refund money for a digital piano.

Then I get home from work and start watching a movie that I DVRed a while back, entitled Freaks. This is a film from 1932, by the director of the first Dracula film. And let me tell you, if anyone has a chance to watch it (it's only an hour long), please do. It's the most fascinating (and disturbing) movie you'll probably ever see. The story revolves around "freaks" or side show performers, and most of them are REAL side show performers. There is a guy who walks around on his hands because he has no lower body, and a girl who has no arms so she eats with her feet. Then there's the guy who has no arms OR legs and rocks himself along the ground to get places. There are many others, and the story is pretty good too. The only thing lacking is the acting, which I would espect anyway, since these are real people and not actors. Also the director seemed to have a lot of scenes aimed only at showing off the "freaks", but even so, I found them to be very endearing people. I found a cast photo, in which pretty much all of these people had big parts in this film:
If you have any sort of chance of watching it, please do. I doubt you'll see much like it in the today's age of commercialism and political correctness.

Saturday (today): Mike offered to go with me to look for my digital piano. I found one awhile ago in Best Buy that I loved, but was a bit wary because it seemed to be only sold at Best Buys and nowhere else, so when I heard about the Guitar Center sale, we went there first. We found a very pretty Casio PX700 for 700$, and we found Maria's boyfriend who, unbeknownst to me, works there. He remembered meeting us and when I told him that the piano at Best Buy was only 600$ he knocked this one down to 600 and threw in a nice bench for free. I was sold on it, we brought it home, and Mike put it together for me. He left and I spent the better part of tonight playing it. It sounds beautiful, there are 88 keys, I can record and playback songs, I can mix voices, I can hook it to Mike's computer and compose midi files, etc. And it's puuuurty:

So that was my week. I'm currently working on perfecting the song "Czemy Etudes de Mecanisme Opus 849" which is a beautiful song, but fast so kinda difficult. But I'll do it!
